of papers with DOI (digital object identifier) numbers have disappeared from all digital archives. This is revealed by an analysis conducted by the publication researcher Martin Eve. He investigated 1,000 articles randomly chosen from members of Crossref, the biggest agency for DOI registration in the world. Despite their promises, DOIs cannot be accessed reliably. “We ought to reconsider the long-term sustainability of our research ecosystem”, says Eve. Will people otherwise still have access to our work, a hundred years after we’ve died?”
